Exchanging an Indian licence for a Spanish one

India is not on Spain's licence-exchange list. An Indian driving licence can be used short-term with an International Driving Permit, but to drive long-term as a resident you need a Spanish licence — earned through the full theory and practical exams.

The real path, step by step

You’ll take the full Spanish test — theory and practical.

  1. Confirm you’re not exempt

Your country has no licence-exchange agreement with Spain, so you must obtain a Spanish licence from scratch — both the theory and the practical exam.

  2. Make sure you’re a legal resident

You must be legally resident in Spain (a valid residence authorisation / TIE). The exact document accepted can vary — verify your own case.

  3. Pass the medical (psicotécnico)

Take a psychophysical aptitude test (eye exam + reaction test) at an authorised driver-check centre. Roughly €25–50; the report is valid for 90 days.

  4. Driving school or "por libre"

A driving school (autoescuela) is NOT legally required — you can prepare and sit the exams “por libre”. Most people still use one because you’ll need it for the practical (their dual-control car).

  5. Book and pay for the theory exam

Register through a driving school or directly on the DGT sede electrónica. The fee (tasa 2.1) is €94.05 and covers two attempts; fail twice and you pay it again.

  6. Sit the theory exam

30 questions in 30 minutes, maximum 3 wrong (27/30 to pass), on a touch-screen at your provincial DGT office. Availability, wait times and co-official-language options vary by province.

  7. Then the practical — in Spanish

The practical (driving) test is conducted in Spanish only; the examiner gives directions in Spanish, so plan for about B1-level Spanish. Book it through your driving school.

Which countries CAN exchange without an exam?

Spain only allows licence exchange with countries that have a signed agreement — mostly Latin America, plus Japan, South Korea, the UK, Switzerland and others. India isn't among them. You can check the current official list on the DGT treaty page.

Common questions

Can I drive in Spain on my Indian licence while I prepare?
Generally a foreign licence is valid for a limited period after you become resident (commonly cited as 6 months) — confirm your exact case on the official DGT page.
Do I have to use a driving school (autoescuela)?
No — a driving school is not legally required and you can sit the exams "por libre". Most people still use one because you need a dual-control car for the practical test.
Is the theory exam available in English?
Yes — the DGT offers the theory test in English. The catch is that the official English is a very literal translation of the Spanish, which is exactly what PassDGT helps you decode.

The theory exam is 30 questions in English — practise them free, in wording that actually makes sense.
